12 September 2007 – Wednesday (Mercoledi) - Day 11
Sorrento / Pompeii / Naples ... to Rome
Pompeii
Today after breakfast we headed to Pompeii. We all know the story. Twenty two feet of ash covered this entire civilization and over time it was forgotten. The city had been established around the 6th century BC. The two day eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD completely buried Pompeii and its sister city, Herculaneum, until the accidental rediscovery in 1748. But what happened here preserved information about life at the height of the ancient Roman Empire.
As I said, this was rough walking, and very tiring, and the longest leg of the ride from Sorrento to Rome (via Pompeii) was ahead. Tonight was dinner/ball at the Brancaccio Palace in Rome. And Antonella was telling us that from here on the tour would get really busy. (It wasn’t busy before?) Much to see in Rome.
